Saint Motel, SaintMotelivision, A/J Jackson

NAPA, Calif. — In person, the members of L.A. pop ring Saint Motel are much like frontman A/J Jackson's lyrics: Direct, subversively funny and rife with double entendres. Merely aslope their comedic halves, Jackson, guitarist Aaron Sharp, bassist Dak Lerdamornpong and drummer Greg Erwin also accept a drive to create art and introduce or rejuvenate the manufacture.

Saint Motel, which fuses pop with glam stone and funk, recently completed a 3D app for all x tracks on its sophomore anthology, 2016's Saintmotelivision. The app, which the band calls a virtualizer, combines 360-degree animation with virtual reality tech. It can exist viewed using a VT headset and places the listener in a room where the album plays, its cover art comes to life and the lyrics wink by. Past virtue of all ten songs being included, it becomes the kickoff virtual reality album to be released.

Saintmotelivision is the name once attached to a variety-manner multimedia production Saint Cabin tried to stage in Los Angeles. The event would have included music, trip the light fantastic, comedy and other art forms all under the same roof, at the same time. It never took place, but Jackson and his bandmates carried over the central themes of many types of content to the album. A fall headlining tour, the band's largest to date, might push the concept further.

All 4 members of the ring sat downward with RIFF to talk about the future of engineering in music, cracking jokes along the manner.

Cheers for taking a few minutes to chat with me today. I won't take much of your fourth dimension.

Aaron Sharp: Nosotros're done now.
Greg Erwin: Great, thank you then much.
Sharp: That's a wrap.

I'd similar to know about the process and effort that went into your 3D videos. Y'all call them Virtualizers. It'south a term that I had not known before.

A/J Jackson: Information technology's similar a visualizer mixed with a lyric video, mixed with live performance video, mixed with 360-caste graphics. We phone call them virtualizers. Nosotros did 1 for every song on the album. Nosotros merely put out the one for "For Elise." … Then we got like three more, and and so the VR app comes out, and it's the first VR album.

So the app will exist an album and will it exist sold as a packet or?

Jackson: The VR app's going to be gratis. And the idea there is [to be] like a companion piece of the anthology. If you've seen the anthology artwork there'due south like a TV-shaped pool. And there'south a lady dipping her legs in the upper left corner. That'due south where you're going to be in the app. Y'all're going to be sitting at the edge of the pool with your feet in, looking around. And you lot'll cull a video. You await upwards and you'll see the diver coming down. She'll but exist frozen upward in that location.

Y'all (Jackson) and Aaron both studied pic at school. Yous've as well directed some music videos. Is that a huge chunk of why you put so much effort into this?

Jackson: Yeah. Because some of friends from pic school got us into VR; early on stages of it. Then, definitely that had some impact on it.

And the rest of yous guys?

Erwin: Aaron and A/J went to school together. We all kind of were into photography, video, editing and production backgrounds, and then it'south ever been a big part of what nosotros do. We're tired of the 2d dimension, and we're trying to go to the 3rd dimension.

Saint Motel

Saint Motel performs at BottleRock Napa Valley in Napa on May 26, 2017.

You take described Saintmotelivision equally a collection of different TV stations broadcasting at the same fourth dimension. Did U2'due south Zoo TV Tour and Zooropa album play an influence on the visuals.

Sharp:  Who's U2?
Dak Lerdamornpong:  I wouldn't say yes, but in a weird way, we have a kind of same concept, which is yous watching u.s.a. on the different stations.
Erwin: … Watching you, watching us, watching you lot, watching u.s., in that loop.

You're expressing yourselves not just musically but besides visually, and showing that y'all're thinking about what might happen to music adjacent.

Jackson: And facially, like really good.

I believe one of the Haim Sisters created the face success metric first.

Abrupt:  Oh yes, she kind of has a monopoly on the face thing.
Jackson: She was no. 1 on the face charts. For weeks. Longer than Joe Cocker.

What'southward up next for the band?

Jackson: Probably going to cease. Just become a regular job.
Erwin: I'thousand kind of tired of this.
Jackson: I'll do telemarketing.
Erwin: I'one thousand getting into accounting, personally.
Sharp:  Yeah. Banking; I want to practise a big banking company thing.
Lerdamornpong: My next thing is dinner.
Erwin: Professional dinnerman.

What should fans expect from your headlining tour adjacent fall?

Jackson: Imagine this Saintmotelevision concept taken to the farthest level and that's what yous tin expect. It's all we can say correct now, until everything is officially locked in.
Erwin: Probably a lot of magic, yeah.
Precipitous: By the end of the show, we'll probably disappear. Card tricks. Nudity.
Jackson: The tour will exist called the "send nudes" tour.
Erwin: The Crotch Shot Tour 2017.

I tin imagine the engineering science that you lot could incorporate into something like that. Hack into the phones of anybody in the crowd.

Jackson: Whoa. You stream everyone'south cyberspace history during the bear witness, on the backdrop. I don't know if we're that vicious. Nosotros like our fans. We would never do that.

I desire to talk about "For Elise," which incorporates Beethoven's " F ü r Elise." Where'd the thought come up from? And is it because at least 1 of you is classically trained?

Jackson: "Für Elise" is the greatest muse mystery; mortal beloved. No one knew who Beethoven'due south muse was. And the idea for the vocal was, "This one's for the muses." This song is for the people that are inspiring the songs—to the chord structure of "Für Elise."

So information technology's kind of like the biggest dear song of all fourth dimension ever then because information technology's open to everybody.

Jackson: Yeah. Absolutely. We do proper name-check a lot of specific rock and scroll muses and a large shout-out to Elise, Beethoven'southward muse [kisses his pointer fingers and points to the heaven], whoever she was. But yes, information technology's way more than broad than that. It could exist everyone. Information technology's everybody.

What is "Born Again" about? It sounds vaguely religious; is it?

Jackson: Information technology's based on a friend of mine growing upward who was sent away to religious rehab and not allowed to be my friend because I was a bad influence. I reconnected with him years afterward on the road. It'south been a fun song to do live for a lot of reasons, non the to the lowest degree being that information technology brings out very intense feelings from religious and non-religious people who don't know which way we're leaning. And nosotros're non leaning either way, because the concept of getting born over again is … ridiculous. It gives people, sometimes, a free laissez passer to do horrible things. But it's besides endearing, it'due south sugariness, and gives you hope and the thought of beingness able to start over again.

In what other ways practice you meet music and applied science blending together going forwards?

Jackson: At least in virtual reality, a lot of people are getting into a live show thing. Which is not there yet, because you lot don't want to vesture a headset for 45 minutes. It'southward not comfortable enough. But eventually I could see. … It'd exist the same way you lot have gratuitous viewing of the concert, simply you can pay extra to be in the box seats.
Erwin: Or similar when Kraftwerk is 3D. You tin can experience both means and it'southward still awesome.
Jackson: Eventually you'll be able to meet the concert and can view the concert from anywhere.
Erwin: Like augmented reality.
Jackson: Imagine the Hollywood Bowl. Y'all can choose where you want to exist to watch and listen, and the audio will be 360 degrees from where that position is.

And you're at home or in a movie theater?

Jackson: Yes. I mean, wait at Coachella. Watching it on YouTube is already pretty fun. It's great to be at Coachella, but it's as well great just to exist able to watch it on YouTube in your underwear, with air conditioning.
